Now it was time to get the main race going with all the first drivers seated in the go karts and teams going over final tactics for the start of the race. The 30 second warnings rang out through pit lane and it was time to start your engines. As the karts fired into life, the marshal in the pace kart was doing a few flying laps to demonstrate the course and build the adrenaline to the drivers back in pit lane. The drivers were given the signal to head out on track to begin the formation lap. As the pace kart came back into pitlane the drivers headed down the main straight to begin the race. For the first few laps of the race the drivers were getting the feel for the karts and track and also seeing their fellow drivers standing in pitlane cheering them on to drive faster.
That was after one of the most disastrous starts to a race that we have seen at Kingston Park Raceway for an endurance race with almost all the teams spinning out or crashing into the tyres on the opening lap. The biggest winner from the crashes was the Orange team opening a 20 second lead over the other teams on that opening lap. At the end of the 6th lap the drivers came in for the first of 9 drivers change overs. With the first change overs complete the Orange and Magenta teams showed the other teams that they were serious and wanted to win the race with doing the fastest and smoothest driver change overs. The second driver from team Orange put the question to the other teams, can you win? By setting the new fastest lap with 65.362. 2 laps after putting the new driver in for the Silver team, they parked the go kart under the tyres at turn 7 just to get a feel for crashing at the high-speed corner.
After the third driver change over the smooth driving from the teams started to show cracks with drivers making silly mistakes by driving too deep into turn 1 and crashing into the tyres. They remembered the quick tips that were given to them about braking in a straight line, turn in and feed the power back in so you don’t crash anymore. At the Forth change over the Magenta team were closing in the Orange team by doing some extremely fast and smooth driver change overs which were almost 10 seconds faster than the other teams in the race and 5 seconds faster than their friends from Monday. At the halfway point of the race the leaders were the Orange team in 1st, Magenta in 2nd and the Yellow team sitting in 3rd place. Just before the 5th driver change over the Magenta team were the second team to break into the 65 second lap bracket. At the 6th driver change over the Magenta team set the fastest change over of the race with a 94.452 which was fast enough to see them take the lead from the Orange team.
Now with only a third of the race remaining we are beginning the pointy end of the race which will determine which team is going to win. With drivers crashing due to the fatigue the race was beginning to show even more as the race carried on. The Magenta team had a 5 second lead over the Orange team who were closing in on the lead. With the Magenta team being caught in the traffic from other teams crashing and their own driver mistakes they allowed the Orange team to close the gap and take the lead back from the Magenta team. At the final driver change over the Orange team achieved the fastest pitstop of the race with a 93.373 but it wasn’t enough to open up a bigger lead over the Magenta team. They passed the Orange team heading out of pitlane due to the Orange team catching the side of the kart up against the tyres. With the Magenta team only needing to wedge the gas pedal and hope they can open a big enough gap over the Orange team as these two teams were the only ones on the lead lap. At the checked flag the Magenta team held on to the lead and open up a 9.5 second gap over the Orange team. With the race over, it was time to calculate the lap penalties and by pitting incorrectly the Yellow and Indigo team lost 3rd place to the Grey team who completed the race with no mistakes.
